Kuwait Foundation for the Advancement of Science (KFAS) Now Open for the Al-Sumait Prize in Food Security 2025.
The prestigious Al-Sumait Prize is calling for nominations to honor individuals or institutions whose work has made transformative contributions to food security , health , and education in Africa. Sponsored by the Kuwait Ministry of Foreign Affairs on behalf of the State of Kuwait and managed by the Kuwait Foundation for the Advancement of Science (KFAS) , this prize celebrates groundbreaking innovations driving sustainable development across the continent.
About the Al-Sumait Prize
The Al-Sumait Prize aims to shine a light on exceptional studies, scientific projects, applied research, and innovative initiatives that have a lasting impact on Africa’s economic and social progress.
With an annual award of $1,000,000 USD , this prize recognizes outstanding efforts in addressing some of Africa’s most pressing challenges in food security and nutrition.
Focus Areas for the Prize
The prize will be awarded to individuals or institutions whose research or initiatives have achieved significant advancements in one or more of the following areas:
- Developing new seed, crop, or livestock varieties to enhance food security and nutrition in Africa.
- Increasing the shelf life, caloric value, and nutritional quality of locally produced food.
- Improving smallholder farmers’ access to agricultural inputs, technologies, and markets to ensure nutritious food for vulnerable communities.
- Enhancing resilience to climate change and extreme weather variability for sustainable food production.
- Reducing food waste and food loss across Africa’s agrifood systems.
- Advancing alternative agrifood systems to boost productivity while reducing water footprints, especially in marginal environments.
- Promoting modern business strategies, digitalization, and marketing in food security and nutrition.
- Implementing innovative and sustainable solutions to combat food insecurity and malnutrition.
- Addressing gender equality and women’s empowerment in achieving food security.
- Developing strategies to improve agricultural livelihoods, food security, and nutrition during pandemics.

Eligibility Requirements
To qualify for the Al-Sumait Prize, nominees must meet the following criteria:
- Their work must be innovative and demonstrate high-impact outcomes within the African continent.
- The research or project must promote significant economic, social, and infrastructure development in the field of food security.
- Studies and applied research must be published in peer-reviewed scientific journals and recognized globally.
- Research outcomes should have been implemented in African countries within the past 10 years , with adequate supporting evidence provided.
- Nominations can be submitted by:
- Regional and international institutions, universities, and scientific research centers.
- UN organizations, former prize winners, or former evaluation members.
Note: All submissions must be in English. If the original work is in another language, a comprehensive English summary must accompany the submission.
